Suggested article: What is a DNS zone?

A DNS zone is a distinct part of the domain namespace delegated to a legal entity - a person, organization, or company responsible for maintaining the DNS zone. We can consider the DNS zone as a container of DNS settings and DNS records of a DNS namespace. The DNS namespace can have single or multiple DNS zones, each managed by a particular DNS host/service. This division helps for administrative purposes.

There are 2 most commonly used types of DNS zones:

  • Primary (Master) DNS zone
  • Secondary (Slave) DNS zone

Besides them, there are some other types of DNS zone:

  • Primary/Secondary Reverse zone
  • Primary/Secondary ENUM zone
  • Parked zone
